So, what is this whole blog about?

About 10 years ago I had an idea for a gaming blog, where I would play through grognardy Koei strategy games and pull apart their nuances, but I never put it into practice. Shortly thereafter I discovered the Let's Play subforum of the Something Awful Forums and did a few (mostly poor) video LPs of slightly less obscure action-oriented console games instead. I really wanted to do LPs of more involved games like RPGs and strategy games, especially old computer games, but those require screenshot LPs that require a lot more time and effort to do justice to. I'd still like to cover them, just not in as much detail and with as much regularity as a good LP demands.

Hence this blog. I've got a few games in mind I'd like to cover; I don't know if I'll get through all or even any of them, but I'd like to try. A couple of the folks in the CRPG thread on the SA forums a way back suggested I do an LP of a really obscure RPG, Deathlord. I've tossed that idea around for quite a long time but never got around to it, so that's what I'm doing first.

Getting it out of the way now--I'm verbose, and really meticulous about these sorts of things. I'm going to get deep into the details of these games, down to minor details about the game system I've been able to tease out from play, and sometimes even memory viewers and editors. If you're just looking for something less wordy and nerdy, this blog might not be up your alley.

As to the name of the blog, I'm most interested in obscure PC games, so that will be my emphasis here. I won't just be covering English-language games either; I'm relatively proficient in Japanese and have a few Japanese PC-98 games in mind as well. Believe it or not, the Japanese PC gaming market was not always a festering swamp of pornographic trash! In the 80s and 90s there was a wealth of great stuff, mostly available for the NEC PC-88 and PC-98. When those platforms collapsed and gave way to Windows 9x, the non-pornographic PC game market in Japan mostly died with it. I hope to cover some of the gems of that era as well.

As for who I am, I'm an early-40s gamer raised on old-school C64 and Apple II games. The "obscure old gamer" has a double meaning. I've got a busy job, a family and a house to take care of, etc. etc so I won't be able to devote my life to this blog. Expect updates to be erratic at times.

Welcome!
